How Much Does an Overnight Courier Cost in South Africa?
Overnight courier pricing in South Africa is built on a minimum charge that covers the first 2kg, with a per-kg rate applied above that. Most business parcels come in under 2kg, so most parcels pay the minimum. What moves the number is the route: main centre to main centre is the cheapest lane, regional and outlying towns cost more and can add a day.
These are the indicative 2026 bands NIGHTWING quotes into, for the first 2kg:
| Service | Transit | Base rate, first 2kg |
|---|---|---|
| Next-day within a metro (local, in-city) | Next business day | R105 – R140 |
| Overnight, main centre to main centre | Next business day | R140 – R180 |
| Regional (e.g. the wine route) | 24 – 48 hours | from R240 |
| Outlying / Garden Route | Next business day +1 | from R320 |
| Economy (5kg minimum) | 2 – 3 days | from R175 |
| Road freight (10kg minimum) | 3 – 5 days | from R200 |
| Same-day within a metro | Same day | from R600 |
Main centres are Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, Pretoria, Bloemfontein, East London, George and Port Elizabeth. All figures above are base rates. The fuel levy and any surcharges are added on top, and all prices exclude VAT.
Two things are worth knowing before you compare that table to anyone else's.
Read the fuel levy, not just the base rate
The fuel levy is a percentage added on top of the base rate, on every waybill, all year round. Across South African couriers it runs from around 18% at the low end to 50%, 60%, even 70% at the high end. NIGHTWING sits at the low end, around 18%, zero-rated at R20 per litre and reviewed monthly.
That gap decides what you actually pay:
- A R150 base rate at an 18% levy lands at about R177 all-in
- The same R150 base at a 60% levy lands at R240 all-in
Identical service, identical base rate, R63 apart. Compare the all-in figure, not the base rate.
Check the volumetric divisor
You are charged on the greater of your parcel's actual weight and its volumetric weight — length × width × height in cm, divided by the courier's divisor. A lower divisor produces a higher chargeable weight, so it costs you more. The South African road freight market norm is 4000. Some operators quote on 3000. NIGHTWING uses a consistent, transparent 5000, the most shipper-friendly of the three.
On one 50 × 40 × 30cm box that weighs 4kg on the scale:
- Divisor 3000: billed on 20kg
- Divisor 4000: billed on 15kg
- Divisor 5000 (NIGHTWING): billed on 12kg
Same box, same route, three different bills. Always confirm the divisor before you compare quotes — and see our guide to volumetric weight for the full working, or what businesses actually pay in 2026 for the surcharge detail.

Overnight Courier FAQs
How much is an overnight courier in South Africa?
Overnight courier between South African main centres runs a base rate of roughly R140 to R180 for the first 2kg, with a per-kg rate above that. Next-day within a metro starts around R105, regional destinations from about R240, and outlying areas from about R320. These are base rates — the fuel levy and any surcharges are added on top, and they exclude VAT. Most business parcels are under 2kg and pay the minimum.
How is overnight courier pricing calculated?
Every tier is a minimum charge covering the first 2kg, then a per-kg rate above 2kg. You are billed on the chargeable weight, which is the greater of the parcel's actual weight and its volumetric weight (length × width × height in cm, divided by the divisor). NIGHTWING uses a 5000 divisor. The route matters too: main centre to main centre is cheapest, regional and outlying cost more.
What is a courier fuel levy and how much is it?
The fuel levy is a percentage added on top of the base rate on every waybill. South African couriers range from around 18% to as high as 70%. NIGHTWING's levy is around 18%, zero-rated at R20 per litre and reviewed monthly. It matters more than most shippers realise: a R150 base rate lands at about R177 all-in at 18%, but R240 all-in at 60% — for identical service.
How fast is overnight courier delivery?
NIGHTWING delivers overnight parcels the next business day to South Africa’s main centres, with regional areas following shortly after. Collections cut off at 15h00 — book before then to make the next-day window.
Which areas does NIGHTWING’s overnight courier cover?
NIGHTWING’s overnight courier service covers Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and more than 180 destinations across South Africa, both main centres and regional towns.
Can I track my overnight courier parcel?
Yes. Every NIGHTWING courier parcel is tracked from collection to delivery, with proof of delivery on completion.
